The Ultimate 48-Hour Guide to Lucerne: What to See & Do

Lucerne is my Hometown and I’m not lying when I tell you that the Beauty of this Town still fascinates me. Switzerland in general is very beautiful and I definitely recommend you to stay longer and I think 2 Days in Lucerne are a must. If you want to know where to go skiing and hiking in Switzerland these Blogposts are for you. But now lets deep dive into Lucerne.

Lucerne has a lot of museums and different things to offer. You can spend these 2 Days to your hearts contend. Whether it is seeing all the different museums stroll around in the old Town or going on a Shopping spree. Here are what I think could be the perfect 2 Days in Lucerne.

Day 1: Old Town, Bridges & Culture

Morning: Stroll Through the Old Town (Altstadt)

Start your trip by exploring Lucerne’s charming Old Town. With its cobblestone streets, painted facades, and historical buildings. This area feels like a storybook. You need to look very closely ad you will find little paintings, carvings and Statues all over the buildings. Some of the Highlights that you will find are:

• Weinmarkt: A picturesque square surrounded by frescoed buildings.

• Jesuit Church: One of the first Baroque churches in Switzerland.
• Local cafés: Grab a coffee and croissant at Heini or Café de Ville.

Late Morning: Chapel Bridge & Water Tower

No visit is complete without crossing the Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), Lucerne’s iconic covered wooden bridge dating back to the 14th century. Don’t forget to admire the Wasserturm, the octagonal tower that once served as a prison and treasury. If you stroll trough Chapel Bridge look closely at the Ceiling. You will find 460 paintings that that tell the story of Lucerne and Switzerland’s history.

Lunch: Lakeside Dining

Head to Restaurant Opus or Zunfthausrestaurant Pfistern for delicious Swiss fare with views of Lake Lucerne.

Afternoon: Museums & Lion Monument

Lucerne has a view different Museums that you can chose from. Here is a collection to choose from. Whether you are interested in art, science or history. If you want to visit more than one I would recommend to buy the museums pass for the best deals.

Rosengart Collection (Museum Sammlung Rosengart)

A modern Art Gallery featuring masterpieces from Picasso, Klee and other modern artists. The Museum feels very intimate and is expertly curated. It is perfect for art lovers and I can highly recommend it.

Kunstmuseum Luzern (Art Museum in KKL)

Lucerne has a second art Museum that is focused on fine Art from Renaissance to contemporary. It is Located in the contemporary KKL complex near the lake, internationally renowned for its rotating exhibitions and diverse collection.

Natur-Museum Luzern

The Nature Museum focused as the name says on the history of nature. You can expect exhibitions about Biology, Geology insects and minerals. I would say it is the perfect museum for Families with Children and for everyone that is curious about the local nature.

Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus der Schweiz)

Probably my favorite Museum in Lucerne and actually Switzerland’s most-visited museum. From Rail to Read to Air to Water and even Space. You can see and experience everything. One fun thing to do is one of the flight simulators. But that was not all You cand find a cinema, a planetarium and the immersive Swiss Chocolate Adventure (and yes, it is as delicious as it sounds) I would say this Museum is for everyone as it has so many different exhibits. But its especially fun for children and tech Enthusiast.

Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal)

This is one of the sights that you must see when you are in Lucerne. It is a powerful sculpture honoring Swiss Guards who died during the French Revolution—Mark Twain called it “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.”

Evening: Sunset Cruise on Lake Lucerne

Wind down with a scenic boat ride. You can choose a 1-hour sunset cruise for panoramic views of the mountains and surrounding towns or you can book one of the many Dinner cruises and enjoy a relaxing Dinner on the lake surrounded with stunning views.

Day 2: Mountains & Panoramas

Morning: Mount Pilatus or Mount Rigi

Pick one of Lucerne’s two nearby mountains for a half-day adventure.

Option A: Mount Pilatus

• Take the world’s steepest cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad.
• Enjoy panoramic views, short hikes, and alpine cafés at the top.
• Descend via cable car to Kriens, then take a bus back to Lucerne.

Option B: Mount Rigi

• Known as the “Queen of the Mountains,” Rigi offers gentle hikes and spa options.
• Accessible via a boat and cogwheel train combo from Lucerne.

I love both mountains and they both offer stunning views and are definitely worth a visit.  I would say if you want to spend just the Morning in the mountains would go for Pilatus. If you want to take a full day Trip Rigi is the best option with the combination of the boat and Cogwheel.

Lunch: Mountain or Return to Town

Grab lunch at a mountaintop restaurant like Pilatus Kulm or head back to Lucerne for lakeside pizza at La Bestia.

Afternoon: Shopping & Sweet Treats

• Pick up Swiss souvenirs: Swiss Army knives, chocolate, or watches.
• Visit Bachmann for artisanal chocolates or a traditional Luzerner Chügelipastete (a pastry filled with veal in a creamy sauce).

Evening: Dinner & Drinks

Finish your 48 hours with dinner at Wirtshaus Galliker for a true Swiss experience or try Old Swiss House for fine dining.
End with a cocktail at Penthouse Lounge or wine by the lake at Seebar.

Quick Tips for Lucerne

• Getting Around: The city is walkable; regional transport is punctual. For Day trips the Railway is very efficient and the best option.
• When to Go: Spring and summer offer the best weather and access to mountain excursions.
• Money: Switzerland uses the Swiss Franc (CHF). Credit cards are widely accepted. Switzerland is not a cheap Country but if you plan ahead you can get some Deals.
• Language: German is the local language, but English is commonly spoken.

Final Thoughts

Lucerne may be small, but its beauty and charm are massive. That is why I chose Lucerne as my Home City. Whether you want to stroll through the beautiful Old Twon, enjoy the lakeview or enjoy classic Swiss Food this Swiss gem is unforgettable—even in just 48 hours.
