Top 10 Hiking Trails in Switzerland (Difficulty, Duration, Insider Tips)
When I think about Switzerland I think Hiking, well and skiing but that is i cover in another Blogpost here, if you want to read that as well. . Switzerland is a hiker’s paradise. We have over 65,000 kilometers (about 40,000 miles) of marked hiking trails — which is absolutely wild for such a small country! And there is a hike for everyone. No matter if you are seeking a relaxing walk by a lake or want to experience the high-altitude and challenging hikes. We have everything. So here is my list of my Top 10 Hiking Trails in Switzerland that I personally love and you should consider doing when you are in Switzerland during Summer.
1. The Five Lakes Walk (Pizol, St. Gallen)
- ⏱ 3–4 hours
- Distance: 10KM
- Elevation gain / loss: ~ + 640 m ascent, ~ 1 000 m descent
- Difficulty: 🥾 Moderate— but “difficult” in places: the route crosses scree and rocky terrain above tree line, so good hiking boots and sure-footedness matter.
- Season: Generally best from July through October, depending on snow/conditions.
- Five alpine lakes with turquoise water, panoramic mountain views.
I have a love/Hate relationship with this hike. It has stunning views of the different lakes and perfect picnic spots to soak it all in. But, the trail goes up and down and up and down again and when you think you are done there is the next hill to climb. I had sore muscles the next day. But it is very worth it.

2. Eiger Trail (Grindelwald to Alpiglen)
- ⏱ 2–3 hours
- Distance: 6 KM
- Elevation gain / loss: Approx. +100 m / –800 m
- Difficulty: 🥾 Moderate narrow alpine paths, some rocky sections, but no exposure.
- Season: Usually July–October (depends on snow melt)
- Below the north face of the Eiger — epic scenery, dramatic cliffs..
The Eiger Trail is a classic — short, sweet, and insanely dramatic. You’re hiking right beneath the infamous Eiger North Face — one of the most legendary (and deadly) walls in climbing history. It’s like walking in a movie set. But don’t worry, with good shoes the hike is quite easy.
3. Oeschinensee Panorama Trail (Kandersteg)
- ⏱ 3–4 hours
- Distance: 8–9 km (loop)
- Elevation gain / loss: Approx. +450 m / –450 m
- Difficulty: 🥾 Moderate narrow sections, a few exposed spots but secured; sure-footedness required
- Season: Late June – October (trail is closed in early season due to snow or safety)
- Loop trail around one of Switzerland’s most beautiful lakes.
The Oeschinensee is probably my favorite place in all of Switzerland. And lets me say something I live near Lucerne which already is beautiful, so this means something an when we talk about the Top 10 Hiking Trails in Switzerland , i have to mention this one. The lake itself is just a calming place to relax and have a picnic and you can just do that. But I suggest doing the Panorama Trail. You will have Stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Its truly a magical feeling up there.

4. Hardergrat Trail (Interlaken area)
- ⏱ 8–11 hours
- Distance: 20–24 km / 23–24 km depending on variant
- Elevation gain / loss: 3000 m total (ascent + descent)
- Difficulty: 🥾 Very Difficult The ridge is narrow and exposed: on many stretches there are steep drop‑offs of 1,000–1,500 m on either side. Not for people with fear of heights.
- Season: June – October: Weather / trail conditions matter a lot — ridge is dangerous when wet or windy; avoid after rainfall or in uncertain weather.
- Knife-edge ridge above Lake Brienz. Dangerous, but legendary…
This Hike is now the 3rd year in a row on my bucket list to do and to be honest I haven’t done it yet cause I’m quite intimidated by it. It is probably one of the most epic, beautiful, and dangerous day hikes in Switzerland. And it’s Instagram-famous for a reason, but it is definitely not for the faint of heart. This is a hike you should only do if you have a lot of hiking experience, and the weather forecast is for a perfect sunny day.
5. Creux du Van (Neuchâtel)
- ⏱ 4–6 hours
- Distance: 14–16 km for the full circular route
- Elevation gain / loss: Approx. 600–800 m
- Difficulty: 🥾 Moderate some rocky paths, steep sections, but no technical climbing required
- Season: May–October (depending on snow and trail conditions)
- Natural rock amphitheater with ibex and stunning valley views.
Creux du Van is called the Grand Canyon of Switzerland and If you are there you realize why. The rock formations were carved by Ice and Water over thousands of years. And it looks as impressive as it sounds. The hike from Noiraigue takes you through peaceful forests, past the icy Fontaine Froide spring, and up to the rim — where you might spot wild ibex perched on the edge. But don’t go to close to the edge.

6. Aletsch Glacier Panorama Trail (Valais)
- ⏱ 3–4 hours
- Distance: 12km
- Elevation gain / loss: +510 m / –630 m

- Known as the “Queen of the Mountains,” stunning 360° views.
I can see the rigi from my balcony and from my office and let me tell you I think although I see it every day it is nothing less than spectacular. This Trail is one of the mots loved and accessible trails in Switzerland. From the top you get a breathtaking view of lake Lucerne, lake Zug and the surrounding alps. This hike is the perfect route for families, photographers or I you are in the mood for a casual walk.
8. Sentiero Verzasca (Lavertezzo area)
- ⏱ Varies | 🥾
- Difficulty: 🥾 Easy well-marked, mostly gentle paths
- Season: Late spring–autumn; some snow may persist in early spring
- Crystal-clear emerald river, stone bridges, chestnut forests.
If you visit Switzerland and have enough time, I really recommend checking Valle Verzasca out. First for me it feels more like Italy than Switzerland and it is just magical and stunningly beautiful.
This hike is a realxing riverside hike trough the petty valley where alpine beauty meets Mediterranean charm. This hike is a scenic trail winding along the emerald-green Verzasca River in Ticino, near the picturesque village of Lavertezzo. Known for its iconic double-arched Ponte dei Salti bridge and crystal-clear pools, the trail follows old stone paths through chestnut forests, rustic hamlets, and dramatic gorges.
I think this is one of Switzerland’s most special and photogenic hikes. I started early in the morning So that I had the Bridge almost to myself. When I came back in the afternoon there were already quite a few people relaxing and chilling in the water. So my tip is if you want a good spot on the riverside com early.

10. Saxer Lücke (Alpstein)
- ⏱ 4–6 hrs
- Distance: 10km
- Elevation gain / loss: +700 m / –500 m
- Difficulty: 🥾 Moderate to difficult (T3–T4) — exposed sections, narrow paths, rocky terrain; sure-footedness required
- Season: Late June – October (snow-free; check conditions)
- Saxer Lücke pass— a stunning V-shaped rock formation between steep cliffs. Think “Game of Thrones meets Swiss Alps.
The last hike from our Top 10 Hiking Trails in Switzerland is another of my favorite hikes. With 5 hours it is quite long but you will be stunned by the beauty of it. This hike is also in the Alpstein region but on another End than the Äscher. The Saxer Lücke is an amazing rock formation it is a scenery so surreal, you’ll think you’ve stepped into a fantasy movie. But there are more highlight. After you’ve seen the Saxer Lücke and make your descend there will be the Fälensee with its stunning beauty. You can reward yourself with taking a dip.
