The Ultimate Guide To Budget Travel: Spend Less, Explore More
WWhether you are going on a super luxury vacation or a Budget backpacking adventure. We all have a budget when it comes to your travels. In this Blogpost I want to focus on how I stay within my Budget. Let me introduce you first to my travel style.
I like to backpack and going on adventures. I am by no means a super tight budget traveler but I don’t want or need the best luxury hotels. For me I want to focus my spendings more about the experiences and the food rather than the transportation or the accommodation. So I would say I am in the middle budget of a backpacker. We plan on travelling to south east Asia and hoping to do this on a budget of 1000 – 1200$ a month. For me budget travel does not mean boring or cheap just smarter. a
For me personally I think its quite easy to overspend and lets be honest we all have done that. Sometimes the best experience come out of it and sometimes you wish you saved and spend it on something else. Here are my tips on how I stay on track with my budget.
Smart travel planning with flexibility
Book flights early to save.
A lot of flight are cheaper when you book them early of course sometimes you can get a last minute steal. But most of the time you pay more.
Accommodation
If you already know when you will be where, you can also book the accommodation ahead of time. But if you want the flexibility, try booking your stay some days bevor you arrive, this also can help to save some bucks. And you will not have a headache cause you don’t know where to go.
Always use comparison tools
Sites like Skyscanner, hostelworld and booking have to be your best friend. You can easily check out the different prices on each site and save some money. You can even do this with transportation. In south east asia I always check on bookaway and on 12Go to get the best deal.
Set a daily spending
Do you research about the daily costs in each country you visit. You will quickly learn what to expect and can plan your budget with these numbers.
Save money by eating like a local
This mostly works when you travel in an Asian or south American country. Shop at markets and eat at street food stands. It not only mostly will tastes amazing. It will be much cheaper than a restaurant. Of course you also can enjoy a restaurant but then try to avoid the touristy areas and maybe go one or two streets or blooks away. You can also occasionally cook for yourself if your accommodation has

Track travel spending daily
I use the App TravelSpend to keep on track. But there are some other options like Trail Wallet or even the notes app. What I like on TravelSpend is that you can set your daily Budget and you can see exactly what you have left for the day. You will quickly notice how small expenses like a coffee, snacks or especially drinks add up.
Save money on transportation while traveling
Taxis and ubers can quickly add up if you take them all the time even if one ride is not as expensive. The little things add up as well. Use wherever possible the public transport or even consider walking. I have seen some of the most amazing things while walking and meeting the friendliest locals.
Look up if there are travel passes available like Eurorail. You cans a lot with these passes.
When you have a long ride ahead of you that maybe not so scenic try an overnight bus or train. This way you don’t have to book accommodation and have transport and bed in one.

Smart accommodation choices for budget travel
If you are looking for a budget friendly accommodation hostels and guesthouses are the best options. I personally really love homestays. Most of the time you get an amazing breakfast included and the people are so friendly and welcoming. Also Airbnb’s for longer stay are a great option. I find my accommodation trough hostelworld and booking.com.
What you also can try is housesitting or couch surfing if you are up for it.
My pro tip is also check for included perks like included breakfast or laundry and sometimes you even get free or discounted tours.
Opt for Free and cheap things to do
Of course sometimes there is just these amazing tour that costs a bit more but is well worth it. Absolutely do these kind of experiences. But on the other days there are a lot of walking tours or museum that are not that expensive or even free to enter. Also hiking or beach days are always a good choice as well.
What I also really like doing is just take a bike or walk. You will see so many things outside the tours and the tourist attractions that lead to some amazing experiences.

Plan extra funds for travel emergencies
I always set aside 10 to 20% (depends on how long I travel) extra budget for emergencies or unexpected splurges. Sometimes emergencies happen and you will be glad to have some extra money even if you have a travel insurance. Having a cushion helps reduce stress if something goes wrong.
Final Tips: Your mindset affects your success
For me budgeting does not mean cutting back on joy. It means prioritizing my must dos and cutting back on for me unnecessary costs. I always try to keep my “why” in my mind. What matters to me and what experiences do I wanna have.
But something I haven’t mentioned yet is the travel dates. If you are flexible with your times and places you want to travel to you can save some big costs by travelling during the low or rain season than during the peak season where all prices are higher.
🧳 Final thoughts on budget travel
Traveling on a budget doesn’t mean sacrificing joy, comfort, or adventure—it simply means being intentional with your choices. With a bit of planning, awareness, and flexibility, you can experience more of the world without draining your bank account. The key is to prioritize what truly matters to you, cut back where it makes sense, and stay mindful of your spending along the way. I always try to think what I could spend the money better on. For example, if I cut cut back on these hotel costs I can book a tour more or stuff like that and these really helps me to stay on track.
At the end of the day, some of the best travel memories come from simple moments: a sunset on a quiet beach, a delicious meal from a street vendor, or a conversation with a local. You don’t need a luxury budget to collect those moments—you just need the right mindset.
So go ahead, plan smart, spend wisely, and make every dollar count toward unforgettable experiences. What are your tips for staying within budget? Let me know in the comments. If you want to read more about Tips and Tricks about traveling here we have a whole page.
