Travel Budgeting 101 How to Save Money During Your Trip
Most of us will probably have some sort of Budget while traveling. For me the longer my trip is the more important it is for me to maximize my funds for it. For me this means saving on Hostels and Transport and splurging on food and adventure. Here is my clear, practical guide to Travel Budgeting 101: How to Save Money During Your Trip — perfect whether you are planning a weekend getaway or a long-term adventure.
Start with a Realistic Budget
You know where you want to go and how long? Perfect but before you book anything you need to figure out how much you can actually spend on the entire trip.
This step can look different from trip to trip. For me personally when I took a Weekend off for a getaway in Mailand I knew how much I could spend before I started to plan. But for my upcoming 3 month trip I started with roughly planning everything then figured out how much I need to save up. To reach my goal.
Either way you want to go you can break it down into key categories:
- Transportation: flights, trains, car rentals, fuel, etc.
- Accommodation: hotels, hostels, Airbnbs, or campsites.
- Food: restaurants, groceries, and snacks.
- Activities: entrance fees, tours, excursions, etc.
- Miscellaneous: souvenirs, tips, emergencies.
Tip: Add a 10–15% buffer for unexpected costs.
✈️ Save on Flights and Transport
One thing no one want to spend more money on then necessary is flight and Transport. For flights i always use fare comparison tools like Google Flights, Skyscanner, or Hopper. Book as early as possible especially if you have a fixed date prices rise closer to departure dates.
When you don’t have a fixed date when you have to fly Compare the different Days. Flying on Tuesday or Wednesday can be much cheaper.
Use public transport instead of taxis or ride-shares once you arrive.
Pro move in my Budgeting 101 tips: Consider overnight trains or buses — they save both travel time and night accommodation.

🏨 Cut Accommodation Costs
I always compare different platforms before I book my accommodation. The ones I like most are: Booking.com, Hostelworld and Airbnb. When I book, I try to stay in a hostel or guesthouse. Typically, they have the best prices. Since I use the booking.com Member program most of the time it’s the cheapest there. I would always recommend using some sort of reward program.
Also sometimes some hostels and Guesthouses offer discounts when you stay longer.
Tip: If you have kitchen access, cooking some meals saves a lot.
🍜 Eat Smart
Not only does local food generally taste better it is almost guaranteed to be less expensive then western food. Also avoid touristy restaurants near landmarks walking away one or two streets already makes a huge difference.
If you want to cook for yourself shop at local markets or family owned grocery stores. They can be cheaper
While you are travelling pack snacks to pack snacks to avoid overpriced airport or train station food. If you are interested to read more about saving during you Travel this Blogpost is for you.

🎟️ Plan Affordable Activities
This is one thing I don’t want to skip and will occasionally splurge on an activity. But I try to mix it with free and cheap activities. A lot of the time you will find free things to do like museums, parks, beaches and walking tours.
You can also look out for city passes; they often bundle attractions at a discount. And if you book tours in advance sometimes you can get an early bird rate.
💳 Manage Money Wisely
Hidden costs of card fees or bad rates at a currency exchange can add up quickly. Try to avoid exchanging at airports and look up which bank has the lowest fees for every country you visit. You can also use no-foreign-fee cards or travel debit cards like Wise or Revolut.
I always track my spending with the app TravelSpend. I set a daily limit and keeps me on track with my budget.
🎒 Pack Smart to Avoid Extra Costs
You should try to pack light to avoid baggage fees. Pro point if you can back in a carry on to avoid paying for luggage in general.
Bring reusable items like water bottles and tote bags. They seem like small expenses but over time they will ad up. Also pack enough essentials like medications or sunscreen they can be quite expensive abroad. I have a full Blogpost about smart Packing and you can download my packing-Checklist here.
