Stunning Landscapes That Make Ninh Binh a Must-Visit
This Place truly has my heart. Ninh Binh was a place I did not know until I started my research for my Vietnam Holidays. If you want to read about my whole 2 week journey I also have a blogpost about that here. Ninh Binh or as we stayed in Tam Coc is just a stunning place full of beautiful nature and lots of things to discover. We decided to stop there and ended up staying longer than planed cause we just loved it so much. It is a backpacker town so there are a lot of bars and young people around but that just makes the whole experience more fun. Tom Coc is also referred to as Ha Long Bay on Land and let me tell you why.
Best Time to visit Ninh Binh
This depends what you want to experience . Each season has its own charm. I went in November and all though the rice fields where already harvested the beauty of the landscape was just stunning and I really enjoyed the lesser crowds. But let me give you a breakdown of the different seasons.
🌾 Best Time to Visit Ninh Binh: Late May to Early June
This is rice harvest season, when the paddies around Tam Coc and Trang An turn golden-yellow and contrast beautifully with the green limestone mountains. It’s one of the most photogenic and magical times to visit. The weather is warm, but not at its hottest yet.
☀️ Spring (March – April)
- Weather: Pleasant, dry, and warm with temperatures around 20–28°C (68–82°F).
- Why Go: Lush green landscapes, comfortable weather for biking and hiking.
- Bonus: Fewer tourists than summer months, making for peaceful boat rides.
🌧️ Summer (June – August)
- Weather: Hot and humid, with occasional heavy rains.
- What to Expect: The rice is mostly harvested by now, but the landscape is still green. This is also low season due to the heat and rain, so accommodations can be cheaper.
🍂 Autumn (September – November)
- Weather: Cooler than summer, averaging 25–30°C (77–86°F), with less rain.
- Why Go: It’s a calm, beautiful time to visit. The rice might be newly planted in some areas, and the skies are often clear.
- Ideal For: Photographers, nature lovers, and couples looking for a quiet escape.
- Tip: Go early in the day to avoid midday heat and rain showers.
❄️ Winter (December – February)
Pros: Fewer tourists, lower prices, cozy vibes.
Weather: Cool to cold (12–20°C / 54–68°F), especially in the early morning and evening. Can be foggy.
What to Expect: Less greenery in the fields, but the karst mountains look mysterious in the mist. Great for moody photography.

What to do and see in Ninh Binh
The province of Ninh Binh has a lot to offer. We stayed in Tam Coc cause it was a very central town that has a lot of homestays, restaurant and bars. We stayed for 4 days but could have spent some more time there exploring and just soaking up the beauty of it. These are my favorite things that you can explore in Tam Coc and around.
1. Trang an Boat Ride
There are two different boat rides the Tam Coc and the Trang an Boat ride. We decided to do Trang an because if offered a ride with 9 different caves and there where some bad reviews about the rowers trying to scam you for more money in Tam coc and we where a bit sacred of that.
The Trang an boat tour was nothing but spectacular. We went early in the morning and has the river to ourself and could really soak up the beauty of the limestone cliffs and the lush green colors of the jungle.

2. Visit Bich Dong Pagoda
This Pagode is about 2 km from Tam Coc town, a quick bike or motorbike ride away and is built into the side of a limestone mountain, surrounded by lotus ponds, rice fields, and towering karsts The Entry is free but a small donation for the upkeep is very appreciated.
Bích Động Pagoda is one of those quiet gems where nature, history, and spirituality intertwine. You don’t need a tour guide—just a bit of curiosity, time to climb, and a camera or journal to capture the peace.
3. Climb Mua Cave (Hang Múa) for Epic Views
There are more than 500 steps to the top of it. But they are very worth it. You will have a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding area and the rice fields. Don’t to the same mistakes that we did and go at sunset. There where so many people that we could not climb up to the dragon. I would definitely go at sunrise.

4. Rent a Bicycle and Cruise the Countryside
The best thing to get around is by a Bicycle or a motorbike. But it is also a great way to just explore the countryside. It is perfect for cycling past rice fields, local homes and grazing water buffalos. There are so many picturesque stops all of Ninh Binh that you can explore on your own time and peace.
5. Stay in a Local Homestay
I loved our experience staying in a homestay. And I think its one of the best ways to spend your time here. It gives you that cozy, authentic vibe while keeping you close to all the natural beauty
One big plus is that the hosts often treat you like family and often do guided tours or bike rentals and can give you the best insider tips.
6. Explore Bai Dinh Pagoda
This was an experience for itself. The Bai Dinh Pagoda is the biggest Buddhist temple complex in south east Asia. It spans over 700 hectares, consisting of an ancient temple and a new, grand complex built between 2003 and 2010.
It’s a major pilgrimage site, drawing both devout Buddhists and casual visitors amazed by its scale and scenery.
We spent almost the whole day walking around the complex and soak in the atmosphere of this truly magical place. The biggest highlight was the massive tower which is called stupa and is 100 meter high.
7. Do some Karaoke in the town
This was a very fun experience. Tam Coc is full of backpackers and there are a lot of bars and karaoke bar. So Grab yourself a beer or a drink and just enjoy the atmosphere and the vibe of this fun town.

Food and Drinks you need to try
Due to Tam Coc being a backpacker town there where a lot of options for western food. So if you are not into Vietnamese food you will definitely finds something. But there are also restaurants that serve other kinds of Asian food like Fried noodles and Ramen. You basically can get what your heart desires. We stayed true to the Vietnamese food and went every night to Ngo Dong Vegan Restaurant. The food was amazing and we just had to try everything.
But Ninh Binh also has some very specific locals specialties.

Grilled Mountain Goat (Dê Núi Nướng)
This is the signature dish of Ninh Binh. The goats here roam the limestone mountains, which means their meat is leaner, firmer, and more flavorful. The local often marinated it with herbs and spices and when done right it should not me gamey. It usually comes with fig leaves, rice paper and soybean sauce so you can make a little wrap.
Cơm Cháy with Goat (Crispy Rice with Goat)
Another iconic dish in this region. Its crunchy, savory, tender, and packed with flavor. The rice is deep fried and then you top it with thin slices of mountain goat meat that is stir-fried with garlic, ginger, onions, and herbs and dip it in a sweet chili sauce.
Goat Hotpot (Lẩu Dê)
And another Goat dish, the locals in Ninh Binh really like their goat meat. This is the third essential dish and it’s arguably the most fun way to enjoy this dish, especially if you’re dining with friends or want a cozy, shareable meal. This is a hotpot like you probably know, it’s a hot bubbly broth and you dip thin sliced meat and veggies in it.
Miến Lươn (Eel Vermicelli)
The thin vermicelli rice noodle are a bit lighter than regular pho noodles. They come in a brothy soup with eel cooked in a flavorful mix of ginger, lemongrass, and turmeric. The broth is light but deeply savory, with a gentle earthy taste.
Why i loved Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh was something I just discovered planning my trip but quickly fell in love with. Spending my time here – Ninh Bình is not just a destination—it’s an embrace from nature itself, where towering limestone karsts rise like ancient guardians over lush green fields, and each moment spent here is a reminder of the simplicity and beauty that our world still holds.
If you are seeking a place to calm down and appreciate nature look no further than Ninh Binh. If you have any questions please reach out to my in the comments section.
