World Culture at Home: Simple Ways to Travel Without Traveling
Stay inspired, stay curious, and keep the spirit of travel alive—even when you’re not on the road. If you are like me you will have a trip coming up most of the time and to make the wait shorter and the excitement bigger I try to give myself some cultural experiences even when I’m home. With a little creativity, you can bring pieces of the world into your everyday life. 1. Cook a Traditional Dish From Another Country
Recreate flavors from your travels by trying authentic recipes from around the world.
Whether it’s Thai green curry, Japanese ramen, Italian risotto, or Moroccan tagine, cooking international dishes lets you relive memories and learn new techniques. For someone like me that loves to cook this is my number one thing I do when I want to feel like I am on holiday at home.
My favorite dish to cook is Vietnamese pho. I learned to love it during my 2 week Vietnam road trip which you can read more about here. Since then I probably will cook pho once a month to feel like I’m back in Vietnam.

Music is one of the most immersive ways to “travel” from your living room.

3. Read Books and Memoirs Set in Different Countries
Let stories take you places your passport can’t.
Read novels, travel memoirs, or folklore from a region you’re curious about. You’ll gain cultural insight while satisfying your wanderlust. If you are not the biggest of reader that are also a lot of Audio Books that could be something for you.
4. Watch International Films, TV Shows or Travel Vlogs
Watching films or TV shows can instantly transport you into a new world. From French dramas to Korean thrillers to Spanish comedies, the world’s storytelling is incredibly rich. They offer a window into daily life, humor, and traditions across cultures.
Something I like to do a lot if I have Wanderlust is to watch Travel vlogs they let me be part of an adventure and be close to a new country and culture.
5. Learn to Make a Drink From Abroad
If you are not the biggest cook and don’t want to cook a dish from another country you definitely can try to make a specific drink from abroad. This could be anything from a colorful cocktail that remind you of Mexico , a Turkish coffee or even and English Tea. It can be a simple way to add a cultural ritual to your morning or evening

6. Practice a New Language
Languages unlock deeper connections with the places you visit. Even brief and small conversation with locals can make their and your day. Use apps, online tutors, language exchange groups, or podcasts to keep your skills fresh.
Try this: Have one “language-only” hour per week with a partner or friend.
7. Take a Cultural Craft or Art Class
Learn something handmade that’s tied to a specific country—like Japanese calligraphy, Indian block printing, Mexican embroidery, or West African drumming. You can not only transform yourself into a culture but you will have something for your home that will remind you everyday of the memories you have with it.

This can tie to the cultural craft if you want but if you are not very handy you can buy decorations even during you travel adventures and decorate your home with it and Decor doesn’t have to be expensive to feel meaningful.
